I've successfully travelled by air on numerous occasions with a soft-shell case without any difficulty. One thing I've done, which I would HIGHLY recommend, is to insert a four-foot long 3/4" hardwood dowel with a rubber crutch tip into the bag inside the bag before zipping up the cover and putting the whole thing into the travel case. The dowel is just slightly longer than the driver , and just short enough to fit inside the cover and case.

My theory is this: the dowel takes the bulk of any force applied to the end of the bag (e.g. if it were dropped on the wrong end) and the crutch tip stops the dowel from puncturing or otherwise damaging the cover and case.

It may not be perfect, but it's worked for me.
